Legal Foundations for Young Entrepreneurs : Intellectual Property

Futurpreneur is proud to partner with the Faculty of Law at the University of Ottawa to host a practical workshop on intellectual property — a key tool for protecting your ideas, creations, and business identity.

As part of the Legal Foundations for Young Entrepreneurs series, this interactive session will help you understand how to safeguard your innovations and strengthen your business’s long-term value.

In this workshop, you will learn how to:

  • Understand the different types of IP: copyrights, trademarks, patents, and trade secrets

  • Identify and protect the assets that matter most to your business

  • Prevent legal risks tied to third-party rights and weak protection strategies

  • Apply practical tips and access resources to effectively manage your IP

This free online session is designed to support diverse young founders — including Black, Indigenous, 2SLGBTQIA+, newcomer, and official language minority entrepreneurs — in navigating IP confidently and strategically.

This workshop is part of an ongoing collaboration between Futurpreneur and the Faculty of Law at the University of Ottawa, aimed at empowering young entrepreneurs with accessible legal knowledge and tools. Through this partnership, Futurpreneur-supported entrepreneurs also have access to exclusive legal clinics offered by the University’s Faculty of Law, providing personalized guidance from law students under the supervision of qualified legal professionals. This initiative bridges the gap between legal expertise and entrepreneurship, helping founders make informed decisions to protect and grow their businesses.
